My 500th & Most Valuable Advertising Blog Post About Saatchi

Peter · December 10, 2015 · Leave a Comment

Wowzer – This Is My 500th Blog Post

BLOGI  started blogging a few years ago to help promote my ad agency Citrus. We were early and, I have to admit, the blog world was a bit less crowded in the mid-2000’s. Today with over 3,000 marketing services blogs, agency blogs have to work a lot harder and smarter. I’ve tried to do just that here.

To commemorate this personal milestone, I want to make sure that this 500th post is highly valuable to my readership – that’s you. After I ramble a bit about what I think are some of my most useful advertising agency insights, I am going to discuss the essentials of my blogging system as a final point. This system works for me as virtually all of my business leads come from this blog as well as LinkedIn, Twitter, Slideshare and guest posting which are tied into the blog. These social media actions are directed by very clear objectives and are focused on targeting ‘you’ via the use of personas. I can tell you that, if used correctly, social media is a highly effective inbound marketing platform. But, you know that.

I believe that many of my past posts have provided value since they have been read over 159,000 times, have been shared across the web and, most importantly, drive those sweet incoming leads from agencies (hopefully like yours) that are looking for growth strategies.

Here Are My Top Posts

As you’ll see, my second most read post at over 9,000! covers the worst advertising pitch and presentation ever.

top posts

“The Worst Advertising Agency Presentation – Ever”  is about a Saatchi & Saatchi pitch debacle and was one of the reasons I wrote my book on how to run winning pitches. The outcome of this botched pitch was that Saatchi did not win the global Adidas account and I didn’t get to run the account from my very own Saatchi sports agency. Go ahead, buy the book to see all of our mistakes and how to avoid them from Amazon here.

The worst ever pitch blog post is also the reason I put the word Saatchi in this headline. “Saatchi” is serious blog post headline click bait. More on click bait, or better yet, targeted keyword rich blog headlines a bit later.

Weekend Musica – Aterciopelados

Aterciopelados Video To Start Up Your Weekend

download aaSo like I’m starting to re-study Spanish. Heading to Sayulita for XMAS with the family and moving to Mexico in 2016. Why not? I can work from anywhere and the time zone is right on.

From Wiki-Landia:

Aterciopelados (English: The Velvety Ones), also referred to as Los Aterciopelados on some albums and other promotional materials, are a rock band from Colombia. Led by Andrea Echeverri and Héctor Buitrago, they have been one of the first rock bands from Colombia to gain international notice and they are among the country’s top groups. Their music fuses rock with a variety of Colombian and Latin American musical traditions. Time magazine wrote that “Aterciopelados’s true skill lies in its ability to take north-of-the-border musical styles…and breathe new life into them, all while giving them a distinctly Colombian sheen.”

I say: Digo, visita este video y cavar a su sonido. Perfecto para un fin de semana de otoño.

British Advertising Maims

“Woman CRUSHED by giant advertising billboard on London street”

billboard-576667That is the headline from an article in the Expresss about a London billboard falling on a woman (who was OK, I think.)

I knew advertising could maim us mentally. Now, I know it can do it to our bodies too.

From the article (and why don’t they say who’s billboard it was)? Fast food boards are the heaviest.

Witnesses heard a “thunderous noise” as the heavy metal and wooden advertising hoarding fell from the side of a building to collapse on top of a woman, aged in her thirties.

Emergency servicesrushed the woman to hospital with multiple injuries following the horror smash in Tooting, south west London.

Passersby said the billboard fell up to 20 feet onto the woman.

Abi Kasipillai witnessed the aftermath of the collapsed billboard.

She said: “I just heard the billboard had fallen on a lady when I walked past.” A number of ambulances, as well as a fire crew, responded to the incident, but it is believed she was stuck under the board for some time.

A Sly Memorial Day

sly-tee-thumbSly Memorial Day

Hey, I get it. The demographics of YouTube skew young. And, I’d imagine that YouTube might even skew older that other video services. But, only 1.2 million views for Oakland’s best? 5 million for Barry… ?

But… I am thinking that parents HAVE to set their kids up. In this case Sly…

Yeah, I saw Sly on St Marks Street.

Charlie Hebdo, Cartoons and Advertising

Charlie Hebdo and The Power of Cartoons In Advertising & Social Media

charlieI have been watching CNN’s “Reliable Sources“, it is a thoughtful and smart TV news show that covers the media world. I highly recommend it. From CNN:

Now more than ever, the press is a part of every story it covers. And CNN’s “Reliable Sources” is one of television’s only regular programs to examine how journalists do their jobs and how the media affect the stories they cover.

As one would expect, the show’s been covering the Charlie Hebdo murders, ramifications for the worldwide press and how they are reporting the story in detail.

One of my biggest takeaways from the whole Charlie Hebdo story is how freakin powerful cartoons are. Which brings me to the point…

Why So Few Cartoons In Advertising and Social Media?

Cartoons grab attention.

Cartoons can be so powerful they’ve driven people to murder. OK, we are not looking for this level of passion in advertising. But, think about it. Why aren’t we using this storytelling energy more?

Cartoons are not boring look-alike advertising messages (see ‘be not boring’ below.)

Cartoons are visual and help cure some information overload issues.

Cartoons tell stories. I have 12 cartoons in my book on pitching. They make a strong visual point about what not to do if you WANT to fail in new business pitches.

Cartoons are visual content that have some staying power in a world that eats up content and spits it out a a rapidly growing rate.

Cartoons can be serialized to create campaigns.

Cartoons get shared.

Cartoons can run in print, social media and in video.

Cartoons fit on phones.

Our love of infographics is essentially a love of cartooning. A stretch? Maybe. But, I dig data-visualization vs. dull-data.

Use More Cartoons…

My good friend  Steve Klinetobe runs the Cartoon Agency. Here is how they describe themselves:

We help companies be NOT boring using the universal awesomeness of cartoon storytelling.

Technically, we’re a content marketing agency. That means we help our clients plan, develop and deliver smart, buzz boosting content for their blogs, social media, and other such things.

But! There is a difference (or as us marketers like to say, a differentiator).

We create cartoons. That’s right, big-eyed funnies that reach out and grab your audience by the heart.

If I were a Creative Director or social media strategist, I’d be thinking of using cartoons. Why aren’t more advertising, mobile and ‘content genrators’ doing this? Even Google’s algorithms like cartoons.

Moving on to advertising agency new business: Why not use cartoons to begin to sell your agency on your website, in your blogs or as something different in your outbound marketing? You will stand out from the other 10,000 agencies, you will tell your story in a delightful way and you could have some fun doing it.

don't be distinctive mistake copy jpegAm I just spewing? I put my money where my mouth is. The cartoon at the left is one of 12 from my book. Here is a post I did on the cartoons.

We all talk about making connections. I think that using  cartons can often work harder than just words.
