B.S. – Millennials Want Mobile Video Ads To Be On Every Device

Peter · November 23, 2015 · Leave a Comment

A Headline From ADWEEK: “Millennials Want Mobile Video Ads to Be Short and on Every Device”

voice-snyder-mobile-ads-hed-2015I know it’s Thanksgiving week and I should be in the spirit. But, I saw this headline and could only laugh at the insanity. The insanity of saying, get this…

Millennials Want Mobile Video Ads to Be Short and on Every Device

The key insane word is WANT. Millenials do not want “Mobile Video Ads to Be Short and on Every Device.” Why does ADWEEK perpetuate this B.S. (like who wants ads all over the place?) I don’t, you don’t and Millenials don’t. Headline copy like this does a major disservice to the advertising industry. I’ve written about the insanity of advertising ubiquity here.

logoOK, last point. The article that follows this headline does not even support the headline’s point. Read the article by Yahoos Andrew Snyder here. The article is about what works not what is wanted.

Happy Thanksgiving. I know you want that!

How Digital & Mobile Should Your Advertising Agency Be?

Peter · October 29, 2013 · Leave a Comment

And the answer? Mucho.

Check out the facts from eMarketer on adult media consumption habits. The dramatic double-digit shift from traditional to digital shouldn’t come as a surprise. But, its worth a hard look by agencies that are planning services and staff skills for the future.

(Mobile, anyone?)

How To Position An Advertising Agency – Part II

Peter · September 19, 2013 · Leave a Comment

position an advertising agencyWelcome to Part II of How To Position An Advertising Agency. Here is Part I. It’s a good place to start.

Positioning An Advertising / Digital / Design Agency Isn’t Easy…

I know, I’ve positioned and re-positioned my own agency and do this for my ad agency clients. Here’s what you are up against.

Most advertising and digital agencies do essentially the same things for a living. Once you’ve decided on advertising or digital or integrated or mobile you are up against many other advertising, digital, integrated and mobile agencies.

Most agencies fear not being able to offer all things to all clients.

Differentiation itself may not be all that it’s cracked up to be. “The general challenge for any brand in any market is that what is differentiating is often not motivating and what is motivating is not necessarily differentiating.” This from Michael Moszynski, CEO of London Advertising (more on London later.)

Clients have a very short attention span. They might not spend the time required to read your carefully crafted copy. In this case, being concise would help.

How Is Job Growth In Advertising Vs. Mobile Development?

Peter · April 5, 2013 · 2 Comments

Here is a multi-year chart on advertising jobs from Indeed‘s charting tool (its an instructive playful tool)…

” Indeed is the #1 job site worldwide, with over 100 million unique visitors per month. Indeed is available in more than 50 countries and 26 languages, covering 94% of global GDP.”

I’d say the advertising chart tells an “interesting” story. But to add some deeper perspective, take a look at the next chart on mobile job growth…

“”HTML5” is the #1 job trend – the fastest growing keyword found in online job postings – ahead of “MongoDB” in second place and “iOS” in third place.”

Switzerland, Australia, Norway, Sweden — Not The USA

Peter · November 27, 2012 · 1 Comment

In “The lottery of life. Where to be born in 2013”, The Economist tells us what are the best countries to born in today. Switzerland is #1 and Australia is #2. USA is only #16. You will have to take a look at the criteria to find out why. But, I’ll go with any countries in the top 10. But, moving down the Economist list would you rather live in the UAE than in France or Italy? Yikes.

My primary take away is that, at least according to The Economist*, the USA isn’t the place to start out any more.

* The independent variables in the estimating equation for 2006 include: material wellbeing as measured by GDP per head (in $, at 2006 constant PPPS); life expectancy at birth; the quality of family life, based primarily on divorce rates; the state of political freedoms; job security (measured by the unemployment rate); climate (measured by two variables: the average deviation of minimum and maximum monthly temperatures from 14 degrees Celsius; and the number of months in the year with less than 30mm rainfall); personal physical security ratings (based primarily on recorded homicide rates and ratings for risk from crime and terrorism); quality of community life (based on membership in social organisations); governance (measured by ratings for corruption); gender equality (measured by the share of seats in parliament held by women).
