Nike Made Me Sell My Advertising Agency

How Shortsightedness Helped Me Sell My Nike Advertising Agency.

YO, here’s how Nike blew my mind and reinforced my desire to sell my advertising agency. At the time, we were a Nike advertising agency.

I talk to agency owners a couple of times a month about their plans (hopes, that is) for selling their advertising agency sooner or later. Some are young and are being smart about how to begin to create value for a future sale and some are simply ready to move on – ASAP. All ask me why and how I sold my Portland agency in 2011.

There were many reasons for my heading to the exit. I wanted to move on from running an agency (I had been in advertising and marketing since the 1980’s); I was burnt out by the effects of the recession on our profit margin; I didn’t want to hear about the next increase in my employee health plan; I did not like watching advertising becoming viewed as a ‘commodity’; there were simply too many agencies chasing too few clients; I had some pretty good  ideas for creating the “agency of the future” but didn’t have the energy to make that happen and, finally, I got way tired of poor client decision-making.

How Nike Blew My Mind

download qrOne of my agency’s’ more intelligent clients was Digimarc, the technology firm that essentially owned the QR code market (even the technology behind SoundHound) and, more importantly, a technology that could turn a graphic or logo into an active QR code. Aim your phone at a ‘QR’d’ logo (a logo, not a bar code) and it could launch a mobile marketing event. They called it “The barcode of everything.”

Nike was another agency client. We handled their Major League Baseball and college sports programs. As you might suspect, it was very cool to be a Nike advertising agency – especially an AOR agency.

step-1-bird-e1397837442284One day I brought home a Nike running shoe box and thought that Nike should use the Digimarc technology to activate the Swoosh from being a static graphic to being a very active mobile event launcher. The program was simple and global. Over time, Nike would alert its buyers that there was information and promotional value in aiming their phone at the Swoosh logo. I’m talking millions of boxes that could be brought to life, to tell stories, to sell more stuff.

Just think what Nike could do with the box and related videos – a video message from LeBron, new product intros, and on and on. I’m like thinking that every one of the millions of currently “DUMB” Nike boxes would all of a sudden become a “SMART” marketing tool.

I asked our direct Nike clients if they’d make an introduction to some senior marketers to show them how easily and inexpensively (I stress easy and low cost) they could kinda invent a whole new way to add significant value to their packaging. Note, Nike sells… 120,000,000 pairs of shoes a year.

I’m thinking… No-Brainer

We had the meeting, showed the presentation (see below) and instead of pats on our agency backs… we got blank stares. Blank stares! I’m sitting there thinking that this is a major high-value / low-cost no-brainer and these guys didn’t get it. Did not get that for virtually no cost, they could turn their packaging into a significant brand-owned mobile media device. A media and marketing tool that was perfectly targeted to excite Nike’s core market which are, of course, major mobile users.

Frankly, this was close to my last agency-life straw.

I’ll try to be kind here. I guess the Nike marketers were busy. But, I did have a sense of pearls before swine. Am I being harsh? Maybe. That said, I couldn’t believe that one of the smartest marketing organizations in the world preferred to maintain sending DUMB vs. SMART packaging into millions of homes.

Watch This Amazing Steve Jobs Talk On Advertising

I Thought That I Was Way Tired Of Steve Jobs And The Glory Days Of Apple Advertising

I took a re-look at Apple’s 1997 Think Different TV commercial. You’ve seen it. Watch it again, please. Ads like this are why experienced advertising people from the olden days can (I stress “can”) get real sick about how the advertising industry spends more time thinking about content, programmatic buying, ads that follow you around for the rest of your freakin online life, how to squeeze ads that you don’t want on your phone and how to create brilliant Facebook ads. Oh, and lame click bait headlines like my, “Watch This Amazing Steve Jobs Talk On Advertising”.

OK, stuff it Peter. We’ve heard all of this before.

Just watch the commercial – again. Here’s a line from the spot… (And, then, more importantly, watch the next video.)

“Because the people who care enough about changing the world are the ones that do.”

OK, BUT!

I’ll stop. But, not till you see this internal Apple meeting where Jobs discusses his vision for the company and introduces the ‘”new” Apple (after he returned from exile) and the new :60 Think Different TV spot. Job’s says the new TV commercial is:

“It’s about what we are. It touches the soul of the company.”

I admit it. I can’t control myself: When was the last time your client said that about your advertising? I know 1997 Jobs and Apple doesn’t represent our everyday advertising world reality and your client isn’t Steve Jobs.

But… please start to really want to have your clients get emotional when they see your ad ideas, not your invoice.

My Books Make Me Happy

I’ve written two books. Both are self-published on Amazon as a book-book and eBook. The first, Boomercide: From Woodstock To Suicide was my training-wheels book. It is about using suicide as a financial planning tool (OK, and a deep discussion of suicide itself).

The Levitan Pitch. Buy This Book. Win More Pitches. (yes you can learn more about it and then buy it at the top of this page) is a best seller in the narrow category of advertising agency business development books. It has worked hard as a business development tool for me and because it has sold well, it generates some cash, too.

That’s two books. I am already thinking trough book #3. Yes, folks, you can publish books too and should think hard about the value of taking the time to write a book as an agency marketing tool. It isn’t as difficult as you think and an agency is perfectly positioned to get that book out the door..

Happy At Powell’s Books

So I am cruising through Portland’s Powell’s City Of Books (it’s the largest used and new bookstore in the world, occupies an entire city block and sells over 1 million books.) As a lark, I typed my name into their database and… yup, my book The Levitan Pitch. was listed. This was a surprise because the book is only distributed on Amazon and must have made it to Powell’s as a used book sale. That means that someone in Portland bought the book and then sold it to Powell’s. Cool. Everyone wins.

Top 10 Twitter Tools And Tips For Ad Agencies (OK, Everyone)

twitter-follow-achiever_1_0I know from working with a wide range of advertising and digital agencies that Twitter can work very hard for B2B ad agency new business marketing.

However, trying to run a 24/7 Twitter program that uses best practices to achieve an agency’s goals can be daunting. Marketing communications companies that do not have dedicated staff to run a demanding social media program can get a bit overwhelmed. Good news, there are tools that can make using Twitter as an inbound and outbound platform much easier.

In addition to watching how the smartest agencies use Twitter, I base the following list on my own success in having well over 2,000 direct links per year from Twitter to my very narrowly defined website. In addition (thinking like a networker) I have had  many valuable inter-Twitter direct communications in the past 12 months.

I divide this list into Twitter tools that make creating and posting Tweets much easier and tools that help me use Twitter as a marketing platform — including using Twitter as competitive and direct marketing platform.

Twitter Advertising

While we are all worshiping the Gods of inbound, actually using Twitter as an outbound advertising platform is worth the effort and cost. I know for a fact that, Twitter ads work. Go forth and test them.

Social Media Examiner. A primer on some of your advertising / Follower builder options.

Twitter Advertising. See if Twitter ‘s advertising website whets your outbound appetite.

Twitter Production And Scheduling Tools

Bit.ly. With a 140 character limit, you have to shorten any URL’s posted to Twitter. Bit.ly does a bit more cool stuff. But shortening alone means you need to have this built into your browser.

Buffer. Buffer is my number one easy to use scheduling system, it is connected to my WordPress blog to automatically send my blog post URL’s and a snippt to Twitter (and LikedIn and Facebook). Importantly because I need to save time, it also allows me to schedule a set of  Tweets into the future.

Canva. According to the Gods of social media, having a graphic will increase your clicks and retweets by something like over 1 million. or, some crazy number like that. Canva is a very easy to use web-based graphics tool that edits images and can even be used by your CEO.

Hootsuite. Hootsuite is a social media dashboard that allows you to work on and monitor Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, WordPress from one place. It goes deeper so head over if you are looking for a ‘total’ solution.

HubSpot. HubSpot is a very big boy. Its inbound software will help your agency attract visitors, convert leads, and close customers. And, you can use it to woo new clients with your supreme inbound marketing expertise. As in, using HubSpot will make your agency a social media expert that actually has tools it can resell.

Klear. Klear (formerly Twtrland) delivers social monitoring, influencer marketing and competitive intelligence. Try it out for free. The full plate is a bit expensive. But, it works as a smart business development tool. You gotta spend money to make money.

Social Quant. Social Quant says, “Social Quant increases the size and quality of your Twitter account rapidly.” OK, how can you beat that? Try the 14-day trial and then splurge and pay them $50 bucks per month.

Twitonomy. Use Twitter as a competitive wrench. As Twitonomy says, “Get detailed and visual analytics on anyone’s tweets, retweets, replies, mentions, hashtags… Browse, search, filter and get insights on the people you follow and those who follow you.” Damn, go forth and use your competitor’s data against them, um, for you!

As In… Are We Heading Towards Another Recession??

freak-out-and-trhow-stuffI’ve been doing this advertising agency thing for a long time. Started in the 1980’s and have gone through 5 recessions. Each time, clients got nervous. Many pulled their advertising back but some (the ones we loved) actually added to their budgets to gain market share when their competitors pulled back.

Here is a chart of the recessions. Of course, the most recent recession was a major killer coming just as digital media hit. Traditional agencies really got smacked down.
