Is Your Advertising Agency Business Development Director Doomed?

Yes, Your Advertising Agency Business Development Director Might Be Doomed. A 2020 Update.

The interview below was done in 2014. It remains 100% right on.

Some updated thinking. I am asked on a high-frequency basis by agency management, that means CEO types, if their advertising agency should have a business development director. Because of this question, I thought I’d update this evergreen interview with Brooks Gilley who knows what’s up.

My current thinking based on talking with many agencies is that, at best, only 50% of advertising agency business development directors succeed. I am about to do some haranguing. Why?

  1. As is pointed out below, most advertising agencies have a low to a non-competitive brand position. The degree of positioning sameness –  “we are a digital agency” or “we are creative thinkers” – and messaging sameness – as in no soul or a distinctive opinion or having the goal of being unignorable – is crazy. How could even a competent business director sell the 50% of agencies that cannot define a strong sales proposition? Or not have a well-considered target market?
  2. A huge chunk of agencies (it has been reported that up to 75% of agencies) do not have a master business development plan, think of it as a sales plan. How is this possible? And, worse, who is supposed to write the plan? I do not think that a business development director alone can write this plan. It should be an agency self-preservation and growth project.
  3. Many advertising agency leaders have little experience in writing a sales manager compensation plan. Here is a compensation plan you can use.
  4. Too many agency leaders hand off the role of business development to the director. I owned my own agency and I devoted at least half of my time to business development. And, I provided daily support and thinking and budget.

Back To The Interview About The Doomed Business Development Director.

To quote the Beach Boys… Wouldn’t It Be Nice. Yes, wouldn’t it be nice to have a business development director that brought in more business for your advertising agency than you can handle? But is your business development director doomed from the start?

She or he could be if you do not have agency objectives, a competitive agency brand positioning, something to sell beyond, “Hey we are a full-service/digital/social media agency”. Or, not having a list of clients and categories you want to nail; an active up-to-date CRM system or you are now in a state of panic because you just lost your largest client.

I know that this is a tough job to fill and do. I managed my agency’s business development director at my own ad agency; for Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising in New York and London and as CEO at two Internet start-ups. I have hired ten business development directors over the past twenty years. Some worked out and some, well, not so well. Again, this is one of, if not the toughest, agency jobs to position for success.

An Expert Interview With Brooks Gilley On How To Hire A Business Development Director.

Brooks Gilley is the Founder and CEO of Portland’s 52 Limited. 52 LTD is a 15-year-old creative resource company that connects world-class talent with leading brands, marketing departments, design firms, advertising and digital agencies.

In addition to running one of the west coast’s leading creative talent agencies, Brooks ran the Portland Advertising Federation and worked at advertising agencies.

Peter: According to the RSW/US 2014 RSW/US Agency-Marketer Business Report, the tenure of agency business development directors was two years or less. ADWEEK reports that people in this position at large agencies last less than one year. Is this surprising to you?

Brooks: It’s not surprising at all, largely for the fact that agencies I have worked with on business development director searches come to us in a moment of panic, and that’s usually where the ask starts. It’s a role that is needed now but was probably needed at least twelve months before new business gains became an issue. Additionally, it’s not necessarily a strategic role that is esteemed at and supported within a ‘creative’ organization. Part Two: Rob Walch of Libsyn and Podcast411 – The Lowdown And A Dive Into The Birth Of Podcasting In This 2006 Interview.

You know this, right? The word Podcast comes from the combination of iPod and broadcast. Do you know that Apple made podcasting what it is today? You also know that the beauty of podcasting is the instant delivery to your device via an RSS feed.? But, do you really know all of the early history? This episode of Advertising Stories will bring you up to speed on the birth of podcasting.

By mid-2006 Rob Walch had already recorded 149 episodes on his popular podcast411 show. He also knew more about podcasting than anyone in the industry, still is, and he is brutally articulate in this 2006 interview.

One interesting point rob makes is that today’s politicians should use podcasting to get their message out. Podcasting is free; it is not controlled by the FCC; it can be any length and is very personal. It is 2020… where are the political podcasts? No, not the ranting shows. The shows from the candidates themselves.

This entertaining and informative conversation was first recorded in 2006 on my advertising agency’s podcast series, The 360 View. I had just started a marketing podcast, a bit early, but knew that I needed Rob’s perspective on this burgeoning communication platform. He was right then and continues to be an industry visionary.

The Basics: An Advertising Agency New Business Plan

Your 2020 Advertising Agency New Business Plan

advertising agency new business planI admit it. I am going to repeat myself (you’ll know it if you’ve read some of my 600+ blog posts). The marketing communications service industry must have a solid advertising agency new business plan to survive in today’s disrupted and lower margin marketing world.

Wha? Agencies do not have a solid plan? According to ad world research, most do not. I’ve seen stats that say only 40% of advertising agencies have solid active business development plans.

While repeating some of the core tenets of sales, I’ll add some new thinking based on my working with agencies in the USA and around the globe.

Be Unignorable.

That said, the bottom-line for building a productive advertising agency new business plan is to do the sales plan actions that are tried and true – with the objective of standing way out. That means having the goal of being unignorable. Not easy, but a ripe goal to pursue.

Start Here.

These actions are general sales actions that are modified for selling a highly competitive service like your advertising agency. By the way, congrats if you’ve gone beyond just offering a service to having a tool or system that you can resell. Give me a shout and I’ll show you examples of what I mean.

You have to break out of the competitive pack. I don’t care if you’re a two-person or a multi-national. You need to say something to a prospective client that stands out and makes them want to make direct contact or say yes when you ask to speak with them.

The agencies that win today deliver messaging that is: well-targeted, succinct and competitive.

Because of this starting point, distinctive agency positionings help clients to quickly recognize the agency’s expertise and value.

I’ve put “winner” agencies into three messaging buckets. They tell prospective clients: ‘what we do’, ‘how we do it’ and ‘who we do it for’ to illustrate the strength of their individual positioning strategy.

Advertising Agency Coaches Are Pissing Me Off.

$2,250 For A Group-Grope Agency Coaches Seminar? Huh? WTF!

One of my California ad agency clients passed on an advertising agency coaching seminar email solicitation. She pointed out that two of my advertising agency coaching competitors are charging $2,250 for agency managers to attend a group seminar on agency positioning.

Huh, I’m like, $2,250 to attend a group-grope seminar that could not conceivably recognize or focus on the very unique challenges confronting individual, as in very different, advertising agencies. I’m sorry about two things. 1) Any coach charging $2,250 for what I am sure is a mostly canned seminar (just an educated guess) and, 2) Exploiting today’s advertising agency marketplace in a very challenging environment.
