Made In America: Made Movement: American Innovation At Work

Peter · September 17, 2012 · 1 Comment

This might be a bit off topic, but…

Made Movement is a Boulder “marketing agency” (built by guys from Crispin Porter) that has positioned themselves as being dedicated to, as they say: “We propel brands that make things in America with business-solving, needle-moving strategy and marketing.” I love that they’ve actually manged to find a business niche that delivers some resonance. Most agencies do not have a brand positioning that is remotely different from all their competitors despite the fact that this is what they say they do for their clients.”

They are also in the eCommerce business via their flash-sale site Made Collection. This site sells made in America goods – like shirts made by folks in the Oregon prison system. Made Movement is hoping to build on research that Americans think that goods made here are superior and also build on a bit of patriotism. The site is well-designed, easy-to-use and cool, its in that 2012 hipster style that’s ruling right now. It is an interesting proof-of-concept for the marketing agency pitch.

OK. Why am I blabbing about this? Made Movement has done a couple of the smart / idea / innovative / envelope pushing things that I think we all need / should / could / have to do… If we want to keep the brain juices flowing.  In their case, they are taking the very (very) moribund ad agency concept and are adding a very new twist, a way to position themselves differently and, via consumer insight, to deliver very fresh ideas.

Fresh is good. Being fresh is a good strategy. Works for all of us.

About You

This blog for the Baby Boom generation – the over 76 million baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964. My goal is to offer news, facts and insights about this diverse demographic group. As you might suspect, there is no shortage of subject matter.

Growing up a Baby Boomer wasn’t boring. Our life has included lunar landings; the Cuban Missile Crises; the civil rights movement; migration to the suburbs; the assassinations of JFK, RFK and Martin Luther King; drug experimentation; environmental awareness; the women’s movement; the cold war; bomb shelters; the Vietnam war; the draft; protests and riots; the Mustang; VW Vans; Walter Cronkite; the Beatles; Motown; Run-DMC; MTV; Woodstock; Easy Rider; MASH; Star Wars; go-go boots and mini-skirts; Nike;  the pill; free-love; Playboy; TV dinners; transistor radios; color televisions; Steve Jobs; Nixon and Watergate and Reagan. And Clinton, Bush and Obama.

We’ve been the highest earning generation.

We own the most houses; 80% of boomers vs. 69% of the general population. Twas a very good thing until the housing bust.

We are well educated with 29% holding a bachelor’s degree and 45 million having attended some college.

We are the most traveled generation and now account for over 80% of all leisure travel.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that most baby boomers have not saved enough for retirement. Not remotely enough. More on this important and threatening situation in future blog posts and it is discussed in-depth in my book: “Boomercide: My Journey From Woodstock To Suicide” which will be published this fall.
